Java Web Developer: Senior / Architect

About Green Island Interactive
Green Island Interactive is an internet solutions and consulting company that has been providing clients in North America, Ireland and the U.K. with creative and effective web solutions since 1999. Due to strong growth and rapid expansion, the company now has an opening for a Senior Java Web Developer / Architect.

The Role
Green Island Interactive is currently performing a major upgrade of our online client services platform, which includes content management, communications, e-commerce, and much more. We're looking for a senior Java/Web developer to:

  • Plan/architect the system upgrade based on our requirements
  • Lead a small team of Java web developers
  • Manage implementation and deployment of the end product
  • Plan testing, load balancing, support, etc.
Although this is a management/planning role, the successful candidate will be expected to aid in implementation as soon as architecture is agreed upon, and support immediately after release.

Start Date - Time Frame
This position is open immediately, and needs to be filled as soon as possible. Although this position is available as a 6-8 month contract initially, a full-time position with Green Island will be an option depending on performance.

Experience
As this role is for a Senior / Architect position, solid "well rounded" experience with Java/Web development is a must. The succesful applicant should be mature and responsible. All of the following are required:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in CS or related major
  • 3+ years experience as team manager, or demonstrated management skills
  • 5+ years experience coding web systems/services in Java
  • Diverse knowledge of Java and web technologies
  • Experience with system planning, architecture, patterns, database planning, etc.
  • Content management systems experience a plus

Responsibilities
The successful candidate would be responsible for the following:

  • Team leadership and communication
  • Project management
  • Management of own schedule (while working to project milestones and deadlines)
  • High standards for integrity of final product
  • Understanding & enforcement of coding standards & documentation
  • Database performance monitoring and optimization

Skills
The successful candidate will possess most or all of the following skills:

  • Object oriented design methodologies and patterns, UML
  • Experience with MVC architecture
  • Solid communications skills
  • Ability to both see the big picture and implement the details
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Any systems administration knowledge a plus
  • A positive, can-do attitude!

Technologies
Green Island uses predominantly Java and Open Source technologies. We employ Rackspace Managed Hosting for hosting of web sites and services. Knowledge of the following is required:

  • Java, J2EE, JSP, Servlets
  • Apache Server with Tomcat
  • Struts framework
  • MySQL, JDBC, ODBC
  • HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX
  • Linux administration

Environment
Applicants should be comfortable working in the following environments:

  • Windows and Linux OS
  • Eclipse / MyEclipse IDE
  • Apache server, Tomcat container
  • Subversion or other version control system

Salary
From $7k - 10k per month. Negotiable, and largely dependant on experience, and whether position is full-time or contract. Please include salary requirements with CV/Résumé.

While staff are expected to be available for meetings with managers, team members and clients on a regular basis, flexible hours can be arranged and teleworking is optional. This position would not entail regular travel, although occasional trips between New York and Dublin locations may be required.
